Student Life

Volunteerism

Broad students are known for their big hearts—and their selfless energy, applied in a variety of projects.

Reaching Out
The Food Fight is famous — and rightly so. In 2006, for the sixth year in a row, Broad MBA students won the annual competition among 21 top MBA programs to collect the most food and money for Second Harvest, a national food bank for those in need. The Broad team crushed the competition by gathering 284,519 pounds of food and $17,252 in cash receipts within a two-week period. Nationwide, this means Broad students were responsible for a whopping 98% of all the food collected in the 21-school competition and nearly 25% of all monies donated. Techniques include enlisting media, tapping corporate resources and recruiting coaches to sign autographs at a grocery chain. Because the food remains in the region where it was donated, many families in the Lansing area benefited from the Broad team's effort. Broad is the smallest program in the Food Fight, and our MBA students consistently win it. Read more.

Mentors and Volunteers
In 2005, Broad MBA students also planned and executed a successful charity auction. The auction raised $13,622 for CureSearch, a national organization supporting cancer.

Members of the MBAA have also mentored local school children, spending an hour a week with a child to help with reading skills, as well as giving extra confidence-building attention.

“I've never seen students who are so externally oriented. It is really remarkable. They don't have any time to do this, yet they engage themselves in it. It is part of the team/family sort of culture that's evolved here.”
